This full-day self-drive itinerary is packed with award-winning attractions, lush boardwalks, canopy views, crocodile encounters and tropical treats. It’s more than a scenic drive, it’s your front-row seat to ancient landscapes, rare wildlife and moments you’ll never forget.

Depart from Cassowary Falls and start your day with a crocodile cruise on the Daintree River, a unique chance to see the prehistoric salties in their natural habitat. Then it’s across the cable ferry and into the forest, where the Jindalba boardwalk takes you underneath towering fan palms and past giant buttress trunks. Climb the canopy tower at the Daintree Discovery Centre for sweeping rainforest views and a fascinating insight into this ancient ecosystem. Stop for a relaxed lunch at Turtle Rock Café, then push on to Cape Tribulation beach for a walk on the sand. Next stop, the Daintree Ice Cream Company where you can cool off with a scoop of tropical sorbet or ice-cream – before heading back to your private spa at Cassowary Falls, to relax and unwind. CROC CRUISE

Get ready for an engaging cruise on the Ultimate Wildlife Experience with the Daintree River Cruise Centre. Over 60 to 90 minutes, you’ll explore one of the world’s most biodiverse waterways, with front-row seats to see saltwater crocodiles, colourful birdlife, slithering snakes and more. This is no ordinary cruise, it’s run by a passionate, family-owned team who’ve been sharing the secrets of the Daintree since 1987. Their expert guides help you spot everything from camouflaged predators to rare, feathered friends. Morning tea is included and tours depart regularly throughout the day, from 9:30am. THE FERRY

The Daintree Ferry is your link to the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation. Operating daily from 5am to midnight, this cable ferry provides the only sealed road access across the Daintree River, linking the southern and northern sections of the rainforest. The 43 metre vessel carries up to 27 vehicles per trip, with crossings taking approximately 15 minutes each way. Tickets can be purchased online or at the southern tollbooth using cash or EFTPOS. JINDALBA BOARDWALK

Stretch your legs and explore dense lowland rainforest at the Jindalba Boardwalk, a serene 650 metre return circuit nestled at the base of Mount Alexandra. Meaning “foot of the mountain” in the Kuku Yalanji language, Jindalba offers an immersive experience with interpretive signage providing additional information. Elevated walkways wind through swamps, creeks and dense forest, providing unique views of ancient figs and towering king ferns. Look and listen for southern cassowaries, whose role in spreading large rainforest seeds is vital, and keep an eye out for Boyd’s forest dragons resting on trunks and branches. This is a National Park boardwalk and access is free.

DISCOVERY CENTRE

The award-winning Daintree Discovery Centre takes you from forest floor to treetop, with a 23 metre canopy tower, mid-level aerial walkway and elevated boardwalks that reveal the rainforest from every angle. Explore the Cassowary Circuit, spot rare plants and animals, and learn about ancient ecosystems through interactive displays, audio tours and touchscreen guides. Your ticket includes a 68-page guidebook and 7-day re-entry, so you can take your time uncovering this extraordinary place. It’s more than a walk in the forest – it’s a deep dive into 180 million years of natural history. Open every day (except Christmas Day) from 9am to 5pm (last entry at 4pm) and is located at the corner of Cape Tribulation and Tulip Oak Roads in Cow Bay, the Daintree. Book ahead or pay on arrival.

TURTLE ROCK CAFÉ

Lunchtime! Turtle Rock Café is a local favourite known for its fresh, wholesome meals and laid-back vibes. The menu is packed with flavour – think amazing burgers, gourmet wraps, toasted paninis, salad bowls, classic sandwiches and more. You can even pre-order a grazing platter to take on the road. Pair it with a barista-made coffee or choose from a wide selection of juices, soft drinks, beers and wine. Open daily from 7:30am to 3pm, there’s no need to book and plenty of parking right out front. CAPE TRIBULATION

You have reached your most northern destination for the day, Cape Tribulation Beach – where the Reef meets the Rainforest. It’s also the only place on earth where 2 natural World Heritage listed sites sit side by side, in 1 unique location. Fringed by coconut trees, pandanus and native vegetation, the beach and headlands look just as it would have when Captain James Cook first spotted it all those years ago. Wander the shoreline, explore the nearby boardwalks and soak in views of the Coral Sea. This is a place of quiet wonder, where nature takes centre stage. Tick the list, enjoy the views and write your name in the sand.

DAINTREE ICE CREAM

Your last stop on this self-drive day is at the locally famous Daintree Ice Cream Company. Top Tip: Keep your eyes peeled for cassowaries during your drive here, they are often spotted alongside the road. Once you have arrived you can indulge in a taste of the tropics with artisan ice creams, gelatos and sorbets, all handmade using exotic fruits grown organically on-site. Their signature four-scoop cup features daily rotating flavours – think wattleseed, black sapote, soursop, coconut or Davidson Plum – offering a unique tree-to-cup experience. Established in 1993, this family-run farm and business is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm (except Christmas Day), it’s located 14 km north of the Daintree Ferry at 1819 Cape Tribulation Road, Diwan.

As the day winds down, there’s no better way to relax than soaking in your private outdoor spa at your luxury Cassowary Falls chalet, sipping on bubbles and watching the rainforest fade into twilight. Tonight, what’s on the menu is at your discretion. You can bring your own supplies and cook up a feast at the chalet, or head into Daintree Village for a meal out. For fine dining, Julaymba Restaurant offers a seasonal menu rich in local flavour. Prefer something casual? The Daintree Village Hotel serves up hearty pub meals until 7.30pm – dine in or takeaway.
